For the second year running Prior Park Prep School’s U11 Boys' Hockey team have beaten seven other local prep schools to win their own festival.
Having comprehensively beaten Kings School, Gloucester (5-0) along with their sister school, The Paragon Junior, Bath (2-1) and St. Hugh's, Farringdon (1-0) in the group stages, the U11 Prior Park team met The Downs, Bristol in the semi-final. An early reverse stick flick from O Gabb proved to be the decisive goal and took the boys into the final against Dean Close, Cheltenham; who had recently achieved 3rd place in the National Prep School Finals.
The final match was a one-off game and Prior Park were confident that their boys were more than capable of matching Dean Close. Both teams played some attractive Hockey and there were a high number of shots on target with the goalkeepers at both ends making telling contributions. After 10 minutes of normal time and 5 minutes of extra time the match was still goalless and it was down to a tense ‘ice hockey style’ penalty shoot-out.
The opening two penalty takers from both schools were clearly feeling the pressure as all four missed. It was down to N Viljoen and E Teale from to show the others how to do it, before Charlie Robbins made the crucial save in goal and made himself the hero of the day!
Mr James Barton, Head of Boys’ Games said: “This is an outstanding achievement for the boys who have made a huge amount of progress this half term. They are a talented group and a pleasure to coach!”
