Sport Star of the Month- February 2018

234

This month, our ‘Sports Star of the Month’ goes to a young lady who is outstanding in her field. She is currently ranked as the No. 1 U12 and U13 Javelin thrower in Great Britain with a throw of 38.37m. Alongside this she also holds numerous Club, County and IAPS U14 records. This is an amazing achievement whist still only being 11 years old.

When performing at this level it is important to have the right coaching, she currently trains in Reading with one of UK Athletics elite Javelin Coaches, Tom Dobbing and to top this off a midweek session with Swindon Harriers throwing Coach Alan Brown.

Our Sport Star also regularly competes in Biathlons (Run and Swim). She competed in the National Biathlon Championships in November finishing 7th in Great Britain.  She trains at Swindon ASC for her Swimming on Sunday evenings where she is also the current club U12 champion and holds the club U12 freestyle record. She also runs with Swindon Harriers on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

Her parents have said that “she has always had a deep love of sport, but has often lacked confidence in her own ability. The sports staff at Cricklade Manor Prep have given her both the opportunities to compete in the Sports she loves and have worked hard to boost her confidence. Her love of Biathlons started with a school competition and progressed from there with her having subsequently won or medalled in a significant number of local and regional competitions.”

They continued to say that “the sports staff recognised her Javelin potential and arranged for 1:2:1 coaching for her with Neil Crossley. Neil had thrown Javelin at an elite level and was able to work on her technique. Neil’s coach, Tom Dobbing, now works with her which has been an amazing opportunity”.

“She was taken to both the IAPS and National Catholics Prep Schools Athletics competitions (winning both and setting records) which was a new venture for the School and gave her the opportunity to compete in an International Athletics Stadium at a National Level”.

It has been fantastic to see the unbelievable journey this young lady has taken so far in her short career and we cannot wait to see what the future holds. At Cricklade Manor Prep, we have been blessed with an amazing talent and honestly feel that we have a future Olympian in our hands.

We thank her for sharing her story with us and wish her the best of luck for the future!

“The sports staff continue to work with Hannah and are a credit to themselves and the school”.
