Swimming the distance between their own school at Prior Park Prep, near Swindon to Helen & Douglas House hospice in Oxfordshire and back, Prior Park Prep school pupils swam a combined distance of 167km (c104miles) this week, all to raise funds for the hospice.
Helen & Douglas House based in Oxfordshire, cares for terminally ill children, young adults and their families through exceptional hospice care, but faces an annual challenge in covering costs of £5.5m a year to run the two hospice houses and to provide it’s much needed outreach nursing service. As one of the children’s chosen charities Prior Park Prep School helped Helen & Douglas House, by organising a sponsored swim and they raised over £3257.68 in two days. The Prep School children swam slots, completing a staggering 166,850 metres, 6674 lengths or 104 miles. One child even swam 96 lengths of their outdoor pool in 40 minutes. The 166 Prep pupils aged six to 13, set their own targets for how many lengths that they would swim, but many exceeded them in order to secure generous sponsorship from generous staff and parents.
I really wanted to help and get lots of money, so I swam as much as I could.Prior Park Swimmer
At Prior Park Prep School we’re keen to support the wider community and to ensure the children are able to swim and lead active lives, so we are really pleased with their performance. We’re very grateful to for all the generous offers of sponsorship that have been made by our school community that have meant that we can offer more funds to Helen & Douglas House.Miss Bird, PE & Games Teacher
Fundraisers from Helen & Douglas House were delighted with the schools efforts and said it was ‘amazing’. A cheque for funds raised will soon be presented to Helen & Douglas House.
