Prior Park Prep School ‘tries’ new RFU community approach

Prior Park Prep School is to share its facilities and passion for rugby with local Cricklade children, as part of an Old Mutual Wealth Kids First England Rugby initiative.

Set in a multi-acre site Prior Park Prep School benefits from a wide range of facilities and is proud to have recently received accreditation as an RFU training ground. Keen to encourage sport for all, Prior Park Prep School has combined with Cricklade Rugby and other local schools to set up teams for the U6, U7 and U8 age groups.

This new approach adopted by Prior Park Prep School not only allows the wider community to benefit from its facilities, but also encourages all schools and clubs to follow the same rules and philosophy known as “Kids First”.

Kids First is England Rugby’s approach to rugby for 6-13 year olds. It gives children the opportunity to prosper by fostering an environment for having fun, learning and building confidence.

The Kids First approach to rugby breaks down the game into small steps allowing the coaches to concentrate on the core skills of running and passing at the younger ages. It introduces contact skills and some of the more complex laws of the game gradually to help children learn and develop at their own pace.

For Prior Park Prep School success of the initiative has already been seen in the acceptance of four pupils onto the Gloucester Rugby developing player programme this season.

We are delighted to be supporting the latest RFU rugby initiative. The new approach to coaching rugby is very much linked to the school’s ethos of sport for all. Joining with other local schools and Cricklade Rugby Club has been a great initiative that means that we’re not only working hard to develop the rugby skills of our own pupils at Prior Park, but also to opening up our facilities and resources to the local children of Cricklade.
