Yesterday, two girls from Prior Park Prep School qualified for the IAPs Athletics Championships, at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on 4 July - Hannah in javelin and Tyla in the 100m sprint.
Hannah, who has already achieved both third position for Great Britain U13 and first position for Great Britain in the U12 age group, smashed the Mercian Prep Schools Athletics Championships javelin record of 25.07m, by throwing 35.69m. This throw placed her first in the qualifiers and meant that she exceeded her own personal best of 31.69m, which is currently recorded on the British Athletics 'Power of 10' site.
Equally impressive, Tyla came first in her heat running 100m in 13.5 seconds. This was just a tenth of a second shy of the Mercian Prep Schools Athletics Championships Record of 13.4 seconds but meant that she too qualified.
Now ready for the Championships, both girls both voiced how pleased they were.
I’m really looking forward to the championships. I know some of the Olympic medal winners have competed there. I am really excited to run in the stadium.Tyla
I was really pleased to beat the Mercian Javelin record. My hero is Javelin throwe,r Thomas Rohler. He’s thrown around 93.90m, I’d like to be as good as him.Hannah
It is wonderful to see our children train, practice and develop, but so exciting when the girls place so well and exceed records like this. We wait with great anticipation for the Championships on 4 July at the Alexander Stadium, but hope the girls all know that we are already so proud of them.Mrs Bird, Head of Girls' Games
