Our role as educators goes beyond the academic and we take seriously our responsibility to help develop the pupils’ spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development. We prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
Our Personal Development curriculum encompasses four key areas: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, Living in the Wider World and British Values. It is delivered through specific lessons, class discussions, cross-curricular topics, assemblies, themed days, school trips and events.
Health and Wellbeing helps children to have a healthy lifestyle, manage change, make informed choices, manage risks and keep safe as well as teaching them how to respond in an emergency.
As children grow they need guidance in developing positive friendships and connections. Our Personal Development curriculum helps them to manage emotions, accept differences, respect equality and operate in a diverse society.
We help the children understand rights and responsibilities, self respect and appropriate behaviours, about belonging to and contributing to groups and communities and valuing the environment.
We teach and we demonstrate British Values so that the children can become valued members of society. Democracy is embedded at Prior Park. Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. Pupils have the opportunity to take part in elections for roles of responsibility in the school, reflecting our British electoral system and demonstrating democracy in action. We teach the children about the advantages and disadvantages of democracy, and how the law works in Britain, compared to other forms of government in other countries.
Our class charter and the Prior Way promotes good school citizenship and British Values. Thus the children learn the importance of laws whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country. Pupils are taught about a range of different religions and beliefs. They learn to accept and respect that people have different faiths and beliefs and that this is protected in law.
